Strange issue concerning "Undefined Header"

Hello. I am new to using a signal generator remotely (E4435B) and am controlling it using MATLAB and an RS-232 port. I've had it running fine doing "simple" stuff like a pulse modulated signal. I am trying to use the advanced options of the Option UN8 configuration - the Digital Modulation. I was able to do what I wanted with the front panel, and translated that to the following commands (from E4400-90327.pdf):
RAD:CUST:MOD:TYPE BPSK
RAD:CUST:FILT RNYQ
RAD:CUST:ALPH 0.350
RAD:CUST:CHAN EVM
RAD:CUST:SRAT 15 ksps
RAD:CUST:REP CONT
RAD:CUST:TRIG KEY
RAD:CUST:STAT 1

They all come back with RAD being an undefined header (error -113).  I've found the SYST:CAP? entry which (along with *IDN?) gives:
Hewlett-Packard, E4435B, US39260130, B.03.86
(RFSOURCE WITH((AM|FM|PULM|PM|LFO)&(FSSWEEP|FLIST)&(PSSWEEP|PLIST)&TRIGGER&REFERENCE))

...and I don't see a RAD as an option there - but like I said, the front panel lets me in. Has anybody seen this before? I am at a customer site so am not familiar with what versions of firmware they may have loaded; but I would assume that if the front panel lets me do something the remote subsystem would too.

Thanks for any suggestions anybody can come up with!
