8168D tunable laser source fails selftest on motor 2

I recently got hold of a 8168D tunable laser source, but it seems to have a problem. When it powers up, it passes all tests and starts stabilizing. The motors make some noise, and then it says initializing. After the initializating the sound changes. It sounds like a motor tries to turn futher than it can go. This sound even stays after the stabilisation is complete. I can start the laser, but even at 10uw the laser protection regularly kicks in.  The automatic realignment won't start and a selftest first says motor 2 ... passed, but then the motor suddenly runs smoothly for a while before it starts to tick again and then it changes to motor 2 ... failed.

Is this fixable? Buying a new laser or the repair of it is too expensive for me, so I'll have to do it myself if possible. Anyone here knows what motor 2 does and what this fault could be? I hope it's as simple as simple sensor registering the end of the tuning range that doesn't work.
