The PMD measurements, which give DGD, IL and PDL spectra, are made with the N7788B together with a tunable laser like the 81940A or 81600B.
The optical output of the laser is connected to the laser input of the N7788B and the device under test is connected across the signal input and output connectors.
The laser is installed in a mainframe like the 8164B that is connected by GPIB to the N7788B. A trigger signal is also connected from the main frame to the N7788B with a BNC coax cable.
The measurement can be controlled from an external PC via GPIB or USB or with the internal PC of the N7788BD model.
The measurements are made during a single continuous wavelength sweep of the tunable laser with an enhanced implementation of the Jones Matrix Eigenanalysis method.
