I recently acquired a used Infinium 54831D oscilloscope. I would like to buy
a memory upgrade option, but I do not know how the responsivity of the
instrument will be affected. It would be nice if I could try the different
memory upgrade options to have an idea which size is sufficient to buy.
Unfortunately, there is no way to get a 14-day trial license for the N5407A-640
memory upgrade option, as with the other software options.
Any help on this would be appreciated.

Due to the architecture of Agilent scopes, the performance is only related to the amount of data that you have on the display, and the measurements that you are doing on that data. Unlike scopes from other manufacturers, you can take a very deep trace, and only look at a small portion of it, while getting good performance. Other scopes have no concept of off-screen memory.
What this means is that if you are running with 128M depth, and you are zoomed, and looking at just 2M of data (1/64 of the data), the performance will be the same as capturing and looking at 2M of data.
When you stop the scope, you can zoom out. As you do that, the scope will get less responsive.
