During the RF Back to Basics : Part 1 – Signal Analysis Webcast, hosted by Agilent Technologies, on 25 January 2012, we received a great number of real-time questions from a broad audience.
If one person asks - someone else will want to know the answer too - so we have captured various questions and answers and are posting them individually here, in this Forum, for your future reference and immediate enjoyment!

Peak: Used primarily for measuring CW type signals
Average: Used primarily for measuring noise or noise like signals. Allows for very make very repeatable RMS power measurement when couple with Power(RMS) Averaging
Sample: This detector is used primarily for noise like signals. Care should be taken when measuring CW signals with this detector. As a single sample is taken for each trace point, the RBW should be greater that the span divided by the number of trace points minus one, or a CW signal could be missed.
