Communicating with Agilent 4278A Capacitance Meter

I am a Graduate Student working with a Agilent 4278A Capacitance Meter. I have sucessfully installed the device using an Agilent GPIB interface. However, I am having problems communicating with the device to retrieve logged data. I have tried using several software such as NI Labview and Matlab but can't get the interface between GPIB and the software to work (MAX won't recognize the GPIB bus and can't find correct adaptor for Matlab). Is there a way to communicate with the device that does not require the use of software? I read that one can use Basic to do this but I am not familiar with such programing language.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
