Effects of cable loss on return loss measurement

I haven't been very responsive to the answers given to my questions in this forum which I apologize for.

A simple question I have, really (which no doubt will have a complex answer).

How does one know when the combined return loss of a setup (cables, adapters, etc.) will affect the accuracy of a return loss measurement. For example taking it to the extreme, I want to measure return loss down to -30 dB. At what point does my setup return loss "limit" my measurement results, assuming a full 2-port cal. Can I get away with using a -20 dB return loss setup? A -15 dB setup? How do you determine this?
