USB error with E4990

I'm trying to communicate with an E4990A impedance analyzer via USB and a labview VI. I downloaded the drivers from labview and the E4990A shows up in my NI MAX device panel and in the VISA pull down list. everything seems to be connected and recognized, but when i run any of the example VIs, i get a labview error E107380732, "VISA:  (Hex 0xBFFF003A) Unable to start operation because setup is invalid (due to attributes being set to an inconsistent state)."

The analyzer's firmware is up to date and I'm using VISA 5.8.

The NI driver wizard says it can already detect and control it, and it's clear that the my computer is talking to the analyzer as sending a query will bring up "query terminated" after a timeout on the analyzer screen.

So overall, I believe the drivers, firmware, VISA, and labview VIs are all working fine, but the analyzer is not responding as expected. Does anyone know what I might try to resolve this?
