Return Loss Basics

A wise man once told me that you have to be careful measuring S11 through a switch because you might just end up measuring the return loss of your switch.  I take that to mean that if the return loss of your switch is worse than your part, it will dominate the measurement.  Is that a good interpretation?

I've been taking netowrk analyzer measurements, and the data has always looked reasonable, but I'm starting to question my data lately.
