Measuring Electrically Long Devices

I own an 8753C network analyzer.

I read Agilent's two webpages on "measuring electrically long devices":

With regard to the last information source, the webpage is not clear in explaining how this measurement error is  caused.

The "phase lock system and frequency control loop" centers the REFERENCE IF signal (the IF signal from the REFERENCE channel)  at the center of the IF filter bandwidth.

The "phase lock system and frequency control loop" tunes the receiver - where the test signal is measured.

Does the "phase lock system and frequency control loop" determine the "receiver-test channel" IF frequency itself, xor the IF filter bandwidth at the receiver-test channel", or does the "phase lock system and frequency control loop" simultaneously change both the settings (IF frequency and IF filter bandwidth)?   The network analyzer is operating in linear sweep mode.  

Outcomes
