Group Delay Measurement of Multistage Converters

Dear All,

I need to measure Group Delay of a multistage converter. The PNA is the E8358A (300kHz to 9GHz). Agilent has an excellent white paper on this specific topic that is called "Measuring Absolute Group Delay of Multistage Converters Using PNA Microwave Network Analyzers".

The setup we plan to use is the so-called "alternative test setup" as in Fig. 4, that is, where we have access to a common timebase.

However, several questions linger in my mind:

1. I understand the need for the "Reference Mixer", but is the
"Calibration Mixer" really required or can I use the DUT itself as Calibration Mixer and later on as DUT?

2. Does Agilent recommend any specific mixer manufacturer for the Reference and Calibration mixers? Reciprocal mixers seem a little hard to come by...maybe I am not searching the right channels!!

3. In general what should the characteristics of the mixers be?

Just for reference, here are my system parameters:

RF_in: 1.2GHz to 2GHz
LO: 1.2GHz to 2GHz.
