N5181A MXG SigGen responses on :STST:ERR? query very slowly from time to time.
Is there any reason for that and any ways to avoid it?
SYST:ERR? command will not return anything until previous processes have completed. If you're sending a sequence of commands, the response could be slow while the instrument is still working on the previous commands. To get consistent response time, write your software in a way where it confirms the source has completed all it's processes, then calls the SYST:ERR? query. This doesn't shorten test times, but it may improve perceived delay at the SYST:ERR? query step.
Make sure your firmware is the most recent version: A.01.87 . Find instructions on how to update your firmware here: N5181A MXG Signal Generator Firmware
