Command line with serial Direct I/O

I'm trying to automate some Linux command line stuff that I have been doing with Putty up till now.

I have connected to my device with the Direct I/O (serial), but I'm having trouble reading back the info returned in a useful way.

For example, the ls command returns a list of files in a particular directory. I have been able to read the results using the "READ TEXT x TOKEN ARRAY:xx" command (where xx is the number or elements in the array). The trouble is that I will never know the number of elemets needed and can't seem to find a way to automatically read whatever is there.

Would anyone with any experience with this type of thing be willing to share some pointers?
