8591A Dead Battery, can't initiate restoration procedure using "RESET"

Nothing unusual but the back-up battery in my 8591A went dead.  If it were an 8590A, I would be able to follow the new start-up procedure which always includes starting with "RESET" followed by keyboard entries.  The 8591A apparently is different as when I touch the "RESET", the display goes into a blizzard of useless data flowing across the CRT.

Is there something special about rebooting an 8591A that doesn't require a RESET? Am I missing something?
