We perform an S21 measurement on PNA E8362C. We save our frequency domain data by using SCPI codes in matlab. Then, we use ifft and windowing functions in matlab to get the time domain transformation results. The results are very similar to the time domain transformation of PNA.

My question is that: Is it possible to get programmatically both frequency and time domain data for *the same sweep*. In this way, we will not try to carry out an ifft transformation in matlab.

I've contemplated buying a 4395A spectrum/network/impedance analyser. There's no TDR option for that. I have also managed to get virtually identical results to a PNA using the software for the low cost (<$1000) VNWA. Although the software is free, it is not open source. Of course MATLAB is not open source, but there's a very good open source implementation called Octave.

Unlike MATAB, the VNWA software is free. The license says its only to use with the VNWA and N2PK VNAs, but in practice the author doesn't object to people using it with other analysers. In fact, he made a modification to it which enabled me more easily with my HP 4284A LCR meter. The software is very impressive. I can't compare it to a modern PNA, but it has a lot more functionality than the older PNA I have used, and also a software emulator of Rohde & Schwarz VBAs that R&S recently gave me free. Once you get padt the fact that the default colors are almost impossible to see on many computers, its pretty impressive.
