Hi, apart from checking pin depth and mechanical functionality what would be the best way an user can check if a sliding load is working well. I want to check the loads of a 85052B.

When checking a sliding load you will begin with the basics like a visual check for any damage to the mating plane or elsewhere. After you set its pin depth to the applicable value, the next step would be to verify its return loss. This can be difficult if the load's return loss is greater than -46dB unless you have a VNA with corrected directivity much better than that. If so, you will need to measure the return loss (actually its resistive and reactive values from the Smith Chart) of the sliding load in each of its positions (usually 6 for HP/Agilent/Keysight sliding loads). From there you'll need to calculate the effective return loss of the sliding load. NIST has written several papers on how to do it. In the meantime I attached a spreadsheet you can use. Enter your six resistive and six reactive values on the RAW tab. There is a bunch of math going on with the next 5 tabs...you'll be interested with the final answer on the DATA tab. Hope it helps.
