1-port calibration without load

I have a component which can be connected both in series or shunt and I want to measure its s parameters using the network analyzer. The evaluation board I have been provided only has open, short and through ports for calibration, so I don't know how to calibrate the VNA for shunt measurements. As far as I know, I need open, short and through calibration when the component is in series using 2 ports of the analyzer and otherwise, I need open, short and load calibration using 1 port when the component is shunt. Is it necessary load calibration to measure reflection reliably in 1 port or is there any other way I am just missing?

Thanks a lot.
