Does one need 4 receivers for unknown thru calibration?

I was contemplating trying to implement unknown thru calibration on my 8720D which does NOT have the 4th receiver, which is option 400. I downloaded the original paper on unknown thru and noticed it looks non trivial to do. But before I spend a lot of time trying to make sense of it, am I wasting my time to even consider it without a 4th receiver? Since I believe it is a form of TRL calibration,  I rather suspect it needs a 4th receiver to do it well.

I've got the latest firmware (7.x) so it supports "adapter removal", but that's very tedious, requiring two 2-port calibrations and messing around with a floppy disk.

Are there any non - proprietary improvements over the paper published by Ferrero and Pisani? Clearly if I did go about implementing the calibration technique, I would want to start with the most suitable algorithm.
