Any tips to adjust VNA setting when looking at highly reflective devices?

I'm trying to measure some devices which are basically open and short circuits, so |rho| is close to 1.0, or a reflection coefficient of close to 0 dB. 

Is there anything I can adjust on the VNA to improve accuracy of such measurements? I'm particularly keen to know the capacitance of an open as accuratly as possible. 

I was thinking of perhaps reducing the source power, so the amplifiers are operating in a more linear region. Is a full 2-port calibration necessary or reccomended when looking at these sort of devices? 

I assume my question is pretty general, and would apply to any VNA, but if there is something specific to certain models, mine is an 8720D.
