How to enable measurement continuously in remote state

I am using the Agilent DMM 34410A to measure the voltage remotely, with the CALC:FUNC AVER turned on.  Whenever the meter is set to remote state, the "auto" measurement stops (the voltage reading does not change), and the count of the statistics function does not increment.  Whenever the meter is switched back to local state, the voltage reading keeps changing (means the measurement is taken continuously), and the count of the statistics keeps incrementing (until the limit is reached).  I can make one measurement in remote state with the command INIT, but can't make the measurement continuously like the in local state.  How do you enable the contiuous measurment and obtain the average of the all the measurements?
