Measuring in time domain using spectrum analyzer

Hello everyone,

i believe some experts can shed light on this.

they always if you put zero span on SA, then it is a time domain measurement.

i  pumped in modulated pulse signal and i can see the "pulse" perfectly using zero span, in time domain, by adjusting the sweep time.

and when i just pump in a pure pulse (non modulated ) using Agilent function generator, i see only a straight line.

this lead to me to think, SA can be measure in time domain, but still we cannot count it as a real oscilloscpe as normally scope will easily display the pulse shape. Any one can clarify ?

thanks for your help.
