vrf From String Bug

Question asked by VRFuser on Sep 21, 2007
Hi,

I have found that the string split function works really well, I use it quite often instead of using token exclude in the from string object.  Split string seems quicker to code and you don’t have to worry about the extra character.

Hmmm, another thing that I find annoying about the from string object is that it always comes up minimized when you create a new one.  You have to double click on it just to get started.  Anyone else bothered by that?

Exactly! It only adds a CR when it doesn't find the excluded chars, which is very strange. I would consider this a bug especially since not everyone sees the problem.

What I thought was interesting about this is -- why it didn't do this on the "123".  Turns out if you change the From String line to

READ TEXT x TOKEN EXCLUDE:"#" ARRAY:*

it also sees it on the first line.  And, why didn't FUKUI Yutaka see the problem?  Is there some other setting?

Hello Reiner,

I didn't abandon From String completely. I agree, it is very useful. I only abandoned it in this one case. The extra CR was causing a problem and it took me a while to figure out what was wrong. The quickest fix I could come up with was writing my own filter.

I can't explain why it happens, but it's not unexpected behaviour really (for me, anyway) - AFAIR, it's done this since I started using VEE (4.0).  I've always assumed that VEE stores text strings with the CR and LF included and the From String doesn't handle this properly, so I always automatically add
to the exclude list.  But, I could never abandon From String, especially using Token Format - it's far too useful!

The way I solved the problem was by abandoning From String and writing my own filter. I just can't rely on functions that exhibit unexpected behavior.

Hi William,

i have the same problem. The only way i see is to put it into formular with

charToInt an then you become "10". Now you can check it with if/then/else.

Hi Antti,

Well, that works, but since there is no CR or LF in the string to begin with I shouldn't have to filter them.

The problem I'm pointing out is that From String adds a CR when it doesn't find any excluded characters. I find this behavior odd don't you?

Hi Bill,

READ TEXT x TOKEN EXCLUDE "3
" is what you're looking for.

All,

Read Text x Token Exclude adds an extra char if nothing from the exclusion list is found. See attached.

Bug or expected behavior?

Bill
