AW: vrf Simple tutorials?

Question asked by VRFuser on Feb 13, 2008
That is Shawn

The easiest way to start is a look at the tutorials which are flash animated. Then read the handbook. There is also a old book about vee available - but in principle you can start with the pdf manual ( or the printed version if you boughht it ! ).
Then the best step is to go to an Agilent VEE training course - which costs money.
All the other steps: Asks the VRF- even if there are rouokie questions...we are all rookies in some way....

Congratulations! You're already being exposed to a real-world scenario. I can't count the number of times I've heard "we can't contact the author..."

You're in luck - VEE targets Engineers, not necessarily programmers.

Welp, I've got a modest collection of VEE-oriented web offerings at http://www.vrfarchive.com/vrf_archive/VEELinks.htm

When you do have specific questions, you can look for the answers at http://www.vrfarchive.com/vrf_archive/SearchVRF.htm

I've always intended to get a FAQ together, but never have. I suppose somebody might have something of that nature. Some of it's entries might
include:

Q. Can I use the PC parallel port for data acquisition?
A. Yes, but you need other software. There are a few different solutions but my favorite is inpout: http://logix4u.net/

Q. Can I use a variable named "xyzzy" in a formula?
A. No, but the attempt can be entertaining if you're over 40.

Q. Can I use a PC to replace instrumentation?
A. Yes, but be prepared to accept *stringent* limitations & don't expect accurate timing from Windows.

Q. What's the difference between a User Function & User Object?
A. A User Function is one copy of a collection of objects that's called. A User Object is a collection of a copy of objects every where it's used. A User Function is analogous to a C or Pascal Function, a User Object is analogous to a macro. Kind of.

Q. Do I have to declare variables?
A. No, but there are certain advantages to doing so. Also, in order to use ActiveX Events object variables must be declared.

Q. Can VEE use libraries from other languages?
A. Most definitely. At the binary level, VEE can call nearly any C API including almost all of the Windows API as well as thousands of other libraries compiled for Win32. VEE is also an ActiveX container and can use most ActiveX controls & Automation libraries. VEE supports .NET too.

Q. Does VEE support Remote Procedure Call?
A. Yes. Explicitly, VEE uses it's own remote api known as veeRPC which is also wrapped in ActiveX as the CallVEE library (this is probably also .NETable now too - I haven't checked in a while). Implicitly, VEE can call any remote server ActiveX or .NET control or library.

Q. How do I get VEE to release Excel?
Delete all variables that hold Excel references & turn off debugging features. If you're using Excel 97, call TerminateProcess. You can use KillExcel.vee or pskill.exe or any of a number of other ways.

Q. Is it bad to call TerminateProcess?
A. Y E S! Only do this if you've tried everything else & it's absolutely, vitally *critical* to stop a process.

Q. Is this all there is to the FAQ?
A. Yes. It's late & I still have work to do.
