If you are only trying to find out what com ports are available on any given machine, why not query the hardware configuration information instead? Since testing the port directly causes random errors.

For what its worth, I've learned a few more things about my Kernel(?)
error: The error only occurs (occasionally) when using PortCtrl.open()
on serial port com1, which happens to be the only serial port I have on
this machine. It never occurs when testing a non-existing port. This is
exactly the opposite of what I expected.
Also, if I loop back and continually retest com1, eventually the error
will occur a second time (while the original error window is being
displayed) and this time the application will exit.
Finally, if I put a delay (1/10 sec) between setting the port number and
attempting to open the port, the error frequency is greatly reduced
(10x) - but not eliminated.
I know most of you are wondering why you should be wasting your time
reading about a CommX.ocx problem but I believe it's possible that this
is a symptom of a fully updated Windows XP bug that might occur under
other circumstances.
