Measuring time intervals - 53131A

Question asked by ticktock on Sep 7, 2012

I'm looking at the possibility of using a 53131A to time high accuracy watches, but I'm not too sure how these things work and wondered if anyone could help me understand a few things?

1. Is it possible to output the time intervals between a number of consecutive trigger events e.g. 1>2, 2>3, 3>4 etc. or would it be more like 1>2, 3>4, 5>6?  I suppose what I'm trying to say is; can one timing period be triggered to start on the same event which ends the previous one, or does it have to be started by the next separate event?

2. I understand (from the manual) that it's possible to measure time intervals spanning a large number of trigger events by setting the gate to a certain amount (up to 1000s).  Is that correct?

3.  If the above are possible, what would the resolution of the time measurement be in seconds? How many decimal places?

Sorry if these are dumb questions but I'm a bit of a novice with these machines.
