vrf VEE & VME

Question asked by michael.asbery on Nov 17, 2005
I've successfully used a E8491B IEEE-1394 PC Link to VXI, C-Size (FireWire) card to control a vxi chassis from VEE.  It's a slot0
firewire controller.  Much faster than gpib and it gets you away from an expensive, obsolete embedded controller in the VXI Chassis.

Hello,

I am not sure what you mean by VEE on a VME platform.  I have put a VME card
in a VXI C-Size Chassis and talked to it through the Slot 0 Controller at
the register level using NI LabWindows/CVI.    The VME Card was put on an
Agilent E1403C B size to C Size Adapter.  I do not see why you could not use
VEE for this type of application.  You would have to use the low level
commands in VISA to do peeks and pokes to the correct memory locations.  The
VME card I used had a C API.  You could call dlls from VEE.

If you are talking about a VME single board computer than I don't know.  I
no longer have access to the set-up it is at my last job or I would try VEE.

Good Luck,
Paul

VME doesn't necessary mean UNIX. There some VME embedded processors (e.g.
Thales) supporting WIN2K and XP. My concern is certainly IO, i.e. will VEE
able to talk to a VME device? Actually SCIL/VISA does support GPIB, USB,
TCP/IP, VXI, COM ports, ... but how about VME?

I know VXI is really a VME extension for instrumentation so I thought some
kind of solution might exist out there.

It might run under WINE. IO would probably be a challenge, but it shouldn't
be too difficult to get around that.
