Dear Denis,

Agilent does have recommendations on how to operate a mixed system i.e. Agilent and another VISA. I'm no expert on this by any stretch of the imagination but you may find the following useful.

Did you install NI VISA first? Agilent's IO Libraries Suite has some specific technologies that make it work well with NI-VISA and NI-488.2.  If you install NI-VISA first, Agilent's installer can do a good job of discovering the NI software it must work with and can install the right components in the right places.

This is because Agilent VEE Pro supports both the SICL and 488.2 I/O API's for searching for GPIB interfaces.  The Agilent IO Libraries Suite 14.1 also supports third-party 488.2-compatible adapters through the Agilent SICL I/O API.  So when VEE queries both SICL and 488.2 for available GPIB adapters, it finds the NI GPIB adapter twice.  VEE cannot tell that the two I/O API's adapter references are referring to the same physical adapter.

You could even see this behavior with Agilent GPIB adapters if you modify the 488.2 board number so that it is in the low single digits (about 0 - 3).  Agilent VEE Pro only searches for 488.2-compatible GPIB interfaces that have board numbers in the low single digits.  The Agilent IO Libraries Suite assigns Agilent GPIB adapters a 488.2 board number starting with 10, so VEE does not "see" Agilent GPIB boards through 488.2 by default, only through SICL.

The only problem these multiple copies cause is user confusion.  You can delete the extra copy of the adapter in the VEE instrument manager to reduce the confusion.  Unfortunately, every time you search for all instruments in the instrument manager you will have to delete the spare interface again.

If it is absolutely essential to stop this behavior for an Agilent GPIB interface you can increase its 488.2 board # outside of the Agilent VEE Pro board search range.  If it is a National Instruments GPIB interface you can delete the interface in the Agilent Connection Expert and turn off the automatic discovery of I/O resources feature in the Options dialog box of the Agilent Connection Expert so the interface does not get re-configured the next time you use ACE.  You may think that right-clicking an NI GPIB adapter in ACE and choosing the "Ignore" option would work but this only works for Agilent VISA, not SICL.

Regards,

Robin Irwin

Subject: RE: [vrf] VEE and Suite 14 IO Libraries Installation problem/ w2k versus X P / IOSuite14.1 Bug ?

Hi All,

We have also had trouble after installing Suite 14 and 7.51, with NI Card.

Agilent's Intuilink stopped functioning! We were attempting to download the screen image from an E4406A VSA. Our fix was to uninstall 7.51 and Suite 14 and simply use 7.0 and M01.01.04 I/O.

Also we have noticed that when Suite 14 searches the GPIB bus it often returns more instruments than actually exist. We are concerned enough that we have delayed installing VEE 7.51 and Suite 14 onto our machines.

Denis

P.s. Have Agilent any possible explanation for these issues?

Hello from Gregg C Levine
Detlef, I'm not one to disagree with you, even today. But that's not the case. I went to the page you cited, and it turns out that they do accept attachments. Scroll down to the entire form and there you'll find places to place everything. They want in a few different places everything you can think of, plus a few obvious. Like for example the host machine is running a release of Win2K, plus what service pack number, release of VEE, et cetera. Plus everything else that you can think of.
