Direct I/O uses SICL, not VISA. If you wanted to use VISA on a pure NI system, we did write a generalized I/O plug&play driver that I think is still available. Unless things have changed dramatically VEE's Direct I/O object puts a call into the SICL layer of the Agilent IO Libraries for GPIB. If the Agilent IO Libs are not installed/you are using the NI API, then VEE throws the call out to the NI488.DLL and hopes that it is there! For the serial port, VEE directs the call to the SICL layer.
