Anyone that really needs to printsomething presentable uses ActiveX. > VEE window to the printer without using the Print
> Screen object?
There is, but I'm afraid it's pretty obscure by VEE standards. The old
PrintScreen example accomplishes this by copying the VEE window as a bitmap
and blasting it off to the printer.
Detlef courteously collected up all the information that I spread over
several different messages in one single posting with the most recent
attachment:
http://www.oswegosw.com/SearchVRF.php?mi=11099
This example could probably use some upgrading to VEE 7 - I'm pretty sure it
would be a lot simpler via .NET rather than the GDI api. It's still a
classic Windows programming example though
VEE4Windows.
Alternatively you could use a custom window printing control or library -
it's a very easy thing to do and I'm sure such things exist although I don't
personally know of any. Maybe search for capture or capture and print or
something.
And about the archive - I see the general notice hasn't shown up yet so just
so y'all know: when it does, forget about it. The power is now back on and
stable.

Holy cow I'm wrong again!
It seems that something else has changed. This works for VEE 5 with popups
over it but not VEE 7 (which I guess is the source of your problem). I can't
imagine what the difference is.
At any rate, forget about PrintScreen.vee. What you need to do is put VEE on
top of any active popups. You can do this by any of several methods.
Probably the easiest is: if you have a script control installed then you can
instance the script library and do AppActivate("Agilent VEE Pro -
<whatever>") where <whatever> is your program name.
If you don't want to create dependencies, then you can call hWnd =
user32.FindWindow("AgilentVEE", 0); user32.BringWindowToTop(hWnd);
Note that both of these methods will only work if the popups are *not* so
called "top-most" windows (those windows that always stay on top of all
other windows regardless of which one is activated). If that's the case,
then the easiest thing to do is to find the offending windows that are in
the way and move them out of the way before executing the PrintScreen
object.

Or how's this for a twist: move the VEE window off screen. I'm not
absolutely sure, but I think that won't affect it's redraw. Move it off,
execute a PrintScreen object, then move it back to where it was. In that
case you only have to find one window whose class you already know - not
several unspecified windows whose classes and titles may be variable.

However, I promise I'll mess with it and see what I can come up with.
Specifically for version 7.

Ok it won't be able to drive a motorcycle through the desert...
> (Hah! Let's put everything in there - it slices, it dices...)
Well there's a couple different deals. Firstly, it won't be like Crystal
Reports or anything like that ('cuz there's already Crystal Reports
more of a simple report generator. Second it won't actually render rtf or
html because there're already controls to do that.
It's specification should be more or less simple. IOW it won't actually
interpret input text - if that's a requirement then one might as well use a
Rich Text control or an html control. It should be easy to use. No more
difficult than an Alphanumeric ideally, though it won't be a VEE object but
rather a COM object - probably an Automation library since there's no need
for a visible representation.
It could have two basic purposes: to snap and print or display (in a
browser) an image of the VEE execution window, allowing for scaling,
orientation and printer selection (naturally all programmatic so no user
interaction is necessary) and the generation & printing or display (in a
browser) of simple reports. Another output option would be to generate an
image or html file (for both functions).
I remember well my days as a typographer, and though I recognize the
superiority of inserting type commands in the text stream the simplicity of
pressing a button to change fonts or sizes is hard to ignore. I'm thinking
of simple calls like SetFont(name), SetSize(size), SetColor(color),
TableHead, TableRow, ListStart, ListEnd and so forth. Call a function, send
some text, call another function, send some more text... accumulate a report
and then print it or show it or write it to disk.
It doesn't do great things like Word or Excel but it gives you a little more
flexibility than simple objects alone (did anybody ever figure out how to
print a Rich Text or HTML control image? - that would make this unnecessary
more or less).
> Are ya gonna write it, Shawn?
I'll do whatever will pay the bills for a couple months! Still there's a lot
of stuff going on at the moment & I doubt I could give it a try any time in
the next week or two.

graphs generated in VEE. This could be used for on-screen reports too,
emailing, or a status web-page? (Hah! Let's put everything in there - it
slices, it dices...)
I've always wanted to be able to change colours on the logging alphanumeric
on the fly, to flag certain lines as failures, for instance...I suppose this
could be done in html, right?
Are ya gonna write it, Shawn? I played with this very briefly a while ago,
but, never had time to go anywhere with it...

How should this work: Would it be strictly for report generation, VEE image
generation or both? Would basic HTML functionality be good enough? Think
basic text generation & maybe some table stuff.

Beautiful! Well I guess in that case there's no need for this punky library
so I'll concentrate on getting rid of popup images that cover the VEE
window. Eventually
Incidentally we're supposed to be playing wild wind vortex roulette later
this afternoon so don't be surprised if the archive goes down for a while
during the storms.

> did anybody ever figure out how to print a Rich Text or HTML control
image? - that would make this unnecessary more or less.
I've been using the IE WebBrowser_V1 control (shdocvw.dll) as a front end
to VEE 5.
I size the control nice and big on its own panel, then I can show or hide
it at will while I change the content.
Cutting a long story short, I generate the HTML / Javascript on the fly
using formula boxes or 'to string' objects and write it out as a text array
to the control's associated Document object (Document.writeln)
For every page I generate, I have a standard header containing several
hidden form fields.
When a link or button is clicked on my page, I use some Javascript to
populate those fields with the name of the VEE function I wish to call, and
any parameters to pass to it.
I then use the Javascript 'raiseEvent' function to raise a particular
Document event - in most cases I use 'Stop'.
I have a VEE event handler function for the Stop event that reads the
contents of my hidden fields (Document.form.field.value) and builds and
executes the appropriate formula call.
I can reference the Document's display objects from within my Vee code, so
can easily change display attributes on the fly such as colour, text size,
show/hide/change images etc
This has all the other advantages that have already been mentioned, and
more - tables, images, image maps, animation, forms, mouse-overs,
hyperlinks, CSS, cool javascript tricks
Back to the point: Printing.
The IE contol provides a function 'showModalDialog' with which you can show
a browser window of any size with no toolbars etc, containing an HTML doc
that you specify.
The window has modal properties, so the user cannot continue without
closing it first.
Most shortcut keys are disabled, with the notable exception of <ctrl>+p
which shows the print dialog.
I use this functionality to generate test reports, using CSS to size them
nicely for printing and insert page breaks (this is the tricky bit !).
My users can display the report and then hit <ctrl>+p to print it to their
favourite printer
Anything can be included in the report that can be included in an HTML
page: coloured text, different fonts, images etc.
Tables can be used to lay it all out nicely.
This may not be everyones cup of tea, and can get complicated quite
quickly, but I've had some really nice results with it.

Call a function, send
some text, call another function, send some more text... accumulate a
report
and then print it or show it or write it to disk.
It doesn't do great things like Word or Excel but it gives you a little
more
flexibility than simple objects alone (did anybody ever figure out how to
print a Rich Text or HTML control image? - that would make this unnecessary
more or less).
> Are ya gonna write it, Shawn?
I'll do whatever will pay the bills for a couple months! Still there's a
lot
of stuff going on at the moment & I doubt I could give it a try any time in
the next week or two.

<font size=2 face="sans-serif">The printing does leave much to be desired. And when your IT department controls the printers, it becomes a choreto ensure that your landscape mode print out always comes out the rightway the first time it prints after opening your code. Since you donot control the driver, you cannot control the default orientation. </font>
<font size=2 face="sans-serif">I have given up on trying the get thescreen perfect and then printing it. It is especially bad when yourperfectly laid out table suddenly needs a new row of data right in themiddle.</font>
<font size=2 face="sans-serif">The answer for me was to use Word bycreating a Word document that acts as a template. In the table, Iplace tags of the format {[tagname]} and then do a search and replace foreach tag. It is all right out of the VEE tutorials but I do not rememberif they were the stock tutorials or something I got from the Agilent website. Add in some advice that you all provided and the thing worksjust fine. I have a company logo on the top and changes in formator content are a breeze.</font>
<font size=2 face="sans-serif">I do create a bitmap of a VEE graphwhich is generated in its own userfunction panel and paste that on to thebottom of my report. I have not tried all of this if VEE 7 yet.</font>
