Shawn, Thanks for the input, I will have to figure out how to tell the non programmer engineers in China what to do to strip the config (after I do it mayself)
One point I forgot to mention, the computer is not connected to a network and there are no other programs running.

Automatic update?
If automatic update is on and set to install updates automatically then the system will attempt to shut down and reboot.
However, I don't think that's the problem. It's more likely that a "not responding" dialog was tossed, and the command to end a task was given. In that case, the system will send a WM_CLOSE to the main window (which is exactly what happens when you click the close box).
As far as pausing goes, I can't offer the slightest clue. Well, maybe. Is the computer going into some kind of power saving mode where processes are paused? Or is a higher priority process hogging the CPU? I can't think of any possible explanation for a thread stopping for any length of time, short of waiting on hardware.
I'd recommend stripping the XP configuration down to minimum and observing. -SHAWN-
