vrf Barcode Readers

Symbol Technologies has the LS-4006i.
For Around $383.00US it has a keyboard wedge, but you can also use rs-232.
This barcode scanner can read small 2-D barcodes as well.

We also use the Intermec reader, with the keyboard wedge.  As Fredrik states
below, they emulate the keyboard, so you can just scan the code into a text
constant box on the panel, which makes it very easy to use.

We are currently using the Intermec 1551, attached between the keyboard and
the computer. They work with virtually every program as they emulate
keyboard input (we have some 300+ units at my current location and the only
problem is the shock sensitivity).
