One more tip -- make sure enough space has been
allocated for the learn string, including any
termination characters. If that doesn't work, try a bus
monitor to see if the string that you are sending looks
complete.

Has anyone ever automated the calibration of the Agilent 8753E ?
I need to calibrate the following :
Reflection
Response
Response & Isolation
I have successfully done the first two, but there is very little info on the third.
If anyone has done this in the past, any information would be very useful.
Many thanks

Nicole and I are pretty confident about the safety of the vrf server.
Actually, we've been talking with the sysadmins for the server recently, and
they know our vrf data on there is vital. The server is part of the standard
backup schedule, and no one is going to scrap the machine out on us, so
we're pretty safe.
We'll ensure that vrf carries on, and that the historical postings continue
to be safe.

I successfully programmed the 8753A many years ago using HP Series 200/300
BASIC. The part of that most remembered is that the 8753 terminated its
learn string output (an ENTER to the Series 200/300) with EOI only. So it
seems appropriate that the I/O configuration for that device should match
this characteristic.
For the learn string input to VEE, a termination of EOI only must be set
(see below). This will require setting up a special instrument in
instrument manager just for the learn string. Otherwise the default is a
line feed. Since there is a high probability of one of the learn string
characters to match that of a line feed, the line feed is not a terminator
for this special case and EOI is the ONLY termination for the string.
Otherwise you might receive a string of improper length, causing a "hang"
when it is re-sent to the 8753.
According to an HP Programming Note for the 8753A Network with the Series
200/300 (08753-90009), the following Rocky Mountain Basic program works:
10 DIM State$[3000] <--Set up string variable for the learn string (3000
length)
20 OUTPUT 716;"OUTPLEAS;" <---- Send learn string to the output buffer in
8753
30 ENTER 716 USING "-K";State$ <---Read learn string with EOI ONLY!!
40 INPUT "CHANGE STATE AND HIT RETURN",DUM$ <-- Operator wait
50 OUTPUT 716;"INPULEAS";STATE$ <---Send the learn string to the 8753 from
computer
60 DISP "DONE" <--Inform operator that operation is complete
70 END
Note that the information I have is only for the 8753A; later models of the
8753 may have a different length learn string. You must declare the string
(text) variable to match that size for your 8753.
I hope this works for you. Unfortunately, I don't have an 8753 to verify.
Hopefully the 8753E is code-compatible with the older boxes.

save and recall 8753 settings?
I haven't used the Learn String for the 8753, but I have
used it for other instruments. Some things to beware of:
1) Obviously you can't write a program without the
instrument present.
2) Not so obvious, some instruments don't gracefully
accept the Learn String from a different revision of the
instrument. The 8753 may be just fine with it, but I
have encountered some instruments that hang. If you are
only dealing with one revision of the instrument and
never intend to upgrade the firmware, this is a don't
care.

One more tip -- make sure enough space has been
allocated for the learn string, including any
termination characters. If that doesn't work, try a bus
monitor to see if the string that you are sending looks
complete.
