vrf Some questions we'd like to ask you

Question asked by VRFuser on Dec 10, 2002
Hi Scott & Nicole

First of all it is good to see that plans are afoot for a new release of
Vee.  It is good for all of us to see a continued commitment to the package.

To answer your questions:

1. I don't use Matlab very much.  This is largely because most of my
learning curve on Vee was back on Vee 5 before Matlab and I kind of found
(or was shown by the good people on this list) ways of doing what I needed
for most applications using other techniques and technologies.
2. Is re-packaging Vee a good idea?  I guess it would depend on the cost
saving for not having Matlab installed as standard.   If the price break is
significant then I am sure there are lots of applications and developer's
out there that have no need of Matlab and it could be an attractive option.

It would be great to see Vee more widely known and used.  It is interesting
to flick through magazines and catalogues to see how many test instruments
and modules come with Labview drivers but with no mention of any Vee
support.  I know in most cases, it is quite easy for a Vee programmer to
hook up to an "unsupported" device but this situation must put off potential
new users of Vee.   Labview has always been more popular than Vee but for a
short while, a few years ago, it seemed that Vee was making real inroads.
Of late, Vee seems to have slipped back again which is a pity because it is
an extremely powerful tool for rapid application development.

I look forward to hearing more about Vee.next at the appropriate time.

Nick

Subject: [vrf] Some questions we'd like to ask you

Hi vrf-ers. It's Scott and Nicole again. We want to learn a bit about your
preferences for MATLAB with VEE.

We're thinking of repackaging VEE to make MATLAB an option, so that when you
buy the next release of VEE (let's call it VEE.next) you only have to pay
for MATLAB if you want it.

Users who don't want MATLAB would get a price break on VEE.next. Those who
do use it would be able to get it included with VEE.next at about the same
price as today, by purchasing the option. And if you want to use the full
MATLAB product with VEE, you would buy VEE.next without MATLAB and connect
your full MATLAB in just as you do today.

We'd like to ask you a couple of questions:

- are you currently using MATLAB with VEE?

- do you think that repackaging VEE as we describe above is a good idea?

We haven't made a decision yet on whether or not to make MATLAB an option.
Your input is important in this decision.

VEE.next - though we'd love to tell you more about VEE.next plans, we cannot
do so right now.

So if you'd like to make your opinion heard, please post your answers to the
vrf, or send them directly to Scott if you prefer privacy.

Best Regards,

Nicole Dierksheide
