vrf Some questions we'd like to ask you

Question asked by reiner.schlieker on Dec 10, 2002
Nicole and Scott,

- I haven't used Matlab yet, but it's probably because I haven't spent the
time to learn how to use it.
- I think the repackaging is a good idea, especially if you can buy it
separately afterwards if you require it, as long as the price difference is
significant.
- if you do order VEE with Matlab, then I think it should include more
documentation (i.e. a book)  Looking thru help files is much harder than
opening a book.
- others here do use the full blown Matlab, so if I wanted to use it, I'd
probably buy a license.

As others have said, I also wish that VEE had more exposure.  Most of the
time that I inquire about compatibility between some piece of test equipment
and VEE, the answer is invariably "what's VEE?".  I appreciate that VEE is
quite a bit less expensive than Labview, and I much prefer programming in
VEE, especially for what I do, but more functionality, as add on modules,
would be welcomed.  ActiveX is not always the best solution, as it requires
learning how to use it for each module that you buy, and the documentation
for some modules is very poor, to say the least.  Basically, VEE has
empowered me to create a large test program very quickly, but having to
learn how to control an ActiveX module slows me down considerably.  A
current example would be that we are building a tester that will include a
vision system to test an LCD display.  I've decided that the fastest and
easiest way to accomplish this is to write the vision test module in
Labview, and control it from VEE!  It would be nice to do the whole thing in
VEE -  I know it's possible, but not nearly as easy, I think, as in Labview.

Anyway, that's my two cents,

Subject: [vrf] Some questions we'd like to ask you

Hi vrf-ers. It's Scott and Nicole again. We want to learn a bit about your
preferences for MATLAB with VEE.

We're thinking of repackaging VEE to make MATLAB an option, so that when you
buy the next release of VEE (let's call it VEE.next) you only have to pay
for MATLAB if you want it.

Users who don't want MATLAB would get a price break on VEE.next. Those who
do use it would be able to get it included with VEE.next at about the same
price as today, by purchasing the option. And if you want to use the full
MATLAB product with VEE, you would buy VEE.next without MATLAB and connect
your full MATLAB in just as you do today.

We'd like to ask you a couple of questions:

- are you currently using MATLAB with VEE?

- do you think that repackaging VEE as we describe above is a good idea?

We haven't made a decision yet on whether or not to make MATLAB an option.
Your input is important in this decision.

VEE.next - though we'd love to tell you more about VEE.next plans, we cannot
do so right now.

So if you'd like to make your opinion heard, please post your answers to the
vrf, or send them directly to Scott if you prefer privacy.

Best Regards,

Nicole Dierksheide
