suppose that would make the difference, especially as, as you say, it's an
absolute device and not a relative one...

I use a tablet for everything- no mouse on the system. Works great for VEE
and everything else. I use the stylus for drawing apps only since
it isn;t very well suited for menu picks. The puck works great
for menus though, and since cordless/batteryless the two are
instantly interchangeable.

I haven't used a mouse since the mid-90's due to RMI injuries
back in the early 90's.
What works great for me is a tablet. The Calcomp Creation Station
and the Wacom equivalent are both great solutions. These allow
either a puck-type pointer (similar to a mouse but no "rowing" and
no tail) or a pencil-type pointer (nobody ever got RMI in centuries
of pencil use!). Both pointers are cordless/batteryless and work
thru up to a cm or so of material.
My RMI was almost certainly due to the "rowing" that a mouse requires.
Tablets are absolute-positioning so zero rowing. Plus your hand
very quickly learns the mapping to screen location so visual searching
and wandering is negligible- instead you just go directly to where you
need to be.

In my opinion the stylus is of very little use for menus- get a puck
