Well no. I don't know how it works at the moment. However, it may be a
general point of interest: whatever mechanism used to be used, it's
*probably* migrated by now to something along the lines of all the other
dynamic discovery mechanisms. The instrument carries a unique code or series
of such that identifies the equipment and (hopefully) it's capabilities. In
fact, it wouldn't surprise me to learn that some instruments are UPnP
capable (it makes a whole lot of sense).
The upshot is that there's always a registrar involved in assigning these
identifiers & so expansion by individuals is not possible.
Not sayin' that's how it works, just that it would make sense.
In fact, any PCI or ISA P&P card instrument already at least identifies
itself by definition.
