vrf VEE Licensing - P.S.

Question asked by VRFuser on Nov 4, 2003
Martin has a great idea here  --

My solution is to build well thought out, robust  programs that have their
own debug hooks in them. Log files, etc..

Of course, I don't follow my own advice

Maybe a silly suggestion but...

Imagine that VEE-RUN has two different modes:

a) By default up to now: only runtime.

b) A new mode that could be called by using a qualifier like debugging for
that purpose that could be executed like the maximize qualifier, for
example: veerun -debug.
In this new mode you could use all the debugging features of VEE Test (see
code, show execution flow, show execution data flow, check global variable
values, etc). But you cannot replace, create or delete any object. In fact
you cannot modify anything and of course you cannot write a new file.

I can see that this new mode (runtime debugging) could need a heavy
installation of veerun. Maybe it would need to decide if installing vee
runtime alone or with debugging tools.

Could this approach help to solve the license item?

On the other hand and in any case I think that VEERUN needs to provide more
information about which is the specific object that has provoked an error,
and VEE test need a better error trap.

regards,

Hi Rob and the vrf,

I think I know what you're requesting, and I agree, 6.2 licensing does not
provide it.

6.2 allows you to use one license wherever you happen to need to, but you
should only execute Pro on one computer at a time for one license. It does
not allow you to use multiple copies of Pro on one license, where all or a
subset of the copies may be in use at the same time. For that, you currently
need to buy N licenses at full price, where N is the number of simultaneous
uses of Pro. For you, N is fairly large, creating a cost problem.

I think you're after a "site license" or maybe a volume license that brings
down the cost when you need to populate many computers legally with VEE Pro,
not VEE RUN. You need VEE Pro rather than RUN because of the better
application management (debug, deploy, troubleshoot, etc) supported by Pro.

Hope I've described your situation correctly.

I am not a decision-maker on that kind of product issue, but I have
forwarded your requirement to our Product Management and R&D folks, and I
believe I can represent your needs to them pretty well. Whether and what
might happen I can't say, but your request has definitely been heard here at
high levels and low, by the right people.

There may be alternatives to the above site or volume license possibility,
but they require some more thought. Maybe some way to "beef up" VEE RUN so
that it's a more practical deployment/troubleshoot-and-fix tool...

Or maybe a passworded switch by which you can leave Pro installed but have
it run "dumb" as VEE RUN, unless you need to work on the code, in which case
you could throw the switch to smarten it up again. This would relieve the
install/uninstall pushups.

Anyway, I hope this response helps.

(BTW, for me, the difficulty is differentiating between the OS and a virus.
They can both be so perverse

Best Regards,

P.S.
The fact that we have proliferated full development licenses on many testers
over the
last 9 years is creating a large problem for us.

We have many testers running VEE 4.01. Many have VEE 5  and a few have VEE 6
licenses
but we are running VEE 4.01 to keep version management manageable. We want
to
upgrade to VEE 7 but it has become cost prohibitive because we cannot
justify
buying licenses for all the production testers. It is more important to have
the ability
to quickly troubleshoot production equipment than it is to have the latest
software.

Please come up with a solution soon, so we can upgrade and migrate to
VEE 7 and Windows XP - Virus Edition [Pun intended, I think Windows is, per
se, a virus].

Thanks for listening

....Rob
