There is a way of obtaining HPGL screen dumps from older instruments. Patience and experimentation is usually the key. For the 8753 family, you need to issue the command: OUTPPLOT. The real challenge is to figure out how read back in the text string since it is likely that several control characters will be in the string that can fool VEE into thinking it has read back the entire string. For my 8753c (and this also works on the B models), I find that I need to read back 5 characters and discard them. The actual screen dump hpgl string is read back into a string array of 5 elements. All you need to do then is write the hpglStr to a file as ASCII. Code snippet provided below (numbers after the outpplot are for sizing/scaling info):
"outpplot 250,596,10250,7796;"
READ TEXT x CHAR:5
READ TEXT hpglstr STR ARRAY:5
You can then import this hpgl image into an MS Office package - however note that Office does not ship with HPGL filters as standard. Head to the MS web-site and download their HPGL filter.
For the 8753, the plots import pretty well. For other instruments (I seem to recall 859x series spectrum analyzers), the hpgl plots looked a little crunchy - the solution was to fork out 50$ on an HPGL editor to 'tidy them up'. A quick search on the web should give you a good few to choose from!
Finally, using PowerPoint you can actually edit the pen colors - import an hpgl file and edit to try. Amazed, I surely was.
Hope this helps,
Andy

Subject: [vrf] Help to using VEE to Acquire Network Analyzer HPGL Files.
Hello to somebody,
I use VEE 6.01 to acquire data through istrument driver from my test equipment.
I have a old HP 8753B network analyzer for which it does not exist istrument driver.
I have found in Agilent Web a program to perform a HPGL screen capture to a file from the Agilent 8753 network analyzer but it don't work.
I believe that the problem is in the different instructions between 8753B and 8753E.
Someone can help me.
I enclose the program EPSG084769.vee.
Thank you very much.
Luciano
