Andy,
low cost devices are the OneWire devices from Maxim (www.maxim-ic.com) .
These devices use their own serial/power supply bus and can be attached
to either RS232 or USB using a small interface box.
There will be some work in creating a program around the OneWire SDK.
The simplest solution in my opinion is to buy a cheap handheld DMM with
RS232 that is able to take temperature readings using a PT100 or NTC sensor.
