vrf Fake RS232 input

Question asked by VRFuser on Oct 10, 2004
If your new instrument is only sending data back to the PC, you can use hardware (you'll need another RS232 port).
For example:
Connect tx of instrument to rx of com1.
VEE reads data from com1 and sends it back out to com1 in the old format.
com1 tx is connected to com2 rx.
old data display application looks to com2 for it's data.

In fact you could use another RS232 port, say com3, to send data to the new instrument.  I'm not saying it's pretty, but a couple of RS232 ports and a bit of wiring has got to be MUCH easier than mucking about with hardware drivers...

You need what's called a filter driver. Can't really think of a way to do
this with VEE.

Subject: [vrf] Fake RS232 input

Hi Folks,

I've got an old data display application that apparently somebody loves
and wants to use with a new instrument.  The application expects to
obtain data from an RS232 port in a specific format.  The new instrument
outputs its data via RS232 but the format is incorrect.  I would like to
write a Vee application that accepts the data, reformats it, and passes
it to the old display.  Can anyone suggest a way to trick the old
application into thinking the Vee output is coming from the expected
serial Com port?

Barrie
