I've played with this some also, and it may make sense in some situations.
The biggest issue is the very poor performance that you end up with. Also,
unless you have a dedicated LAN, there are lots of security and
reliability and collision issues that could come up.
However, it is certainly very convenient to hook anywhere on the net
and talk to your instruments.
