About activeX. It gives you the power to use and control other MS applications being inside vee. e.g. we write results of a test in an excel workbook file (also possible in 4.0) and then print a chosen range of these results (in excel) out to a printer (not possible in 4.0). We save this xls file in an archive, etc etc. Everything without leaving vee. Not simple but very powerful.</FONT></DIV><DIV><FONT size=3></FONT> </DIV><DIV><FONT size=3>We load to vee a lot of data out of calculations made in excel and then run differnet tests.</FONT></DIV><DIV><FONT size=3><FONT face=Arial><BR></FONT></FONT> </DIV><DIV><FONT size=3>We have found that it works better (very stable) and much faster than OLE. </FONT></DIV><DIV><FONT size=3><FONT face=Arial></FONT></FONT> </DIV><DIV><FONT size=3><FONT face=Arial>2. There are other benefits (I cant remeber really how 4.0 was) like multiple equations in one formula object, "go to detail view" which enables you to jump directly from the panel object to the same object in main view, a bit faster, , etc. These alone will improve your life quality and the company will get faster and better looking results.</FONT></FONT></DIV><DIV><FONT size=3><FONT face=Arial>Be carefull to get the 5.01 because the 5.00 has a few very nasty bugs.</FONT></FONT></DIV><DIV><FONT size=3><FONT face=Arial></FONT></FONT> </DIV><DIV><FONT size=3><FONT face=Arial></FONT></FONT> </DIV><DIV><FONT size=3><FONT face=Arial>David J ( <A href="mailto:testardj@inter.net.il">testardj@inter.net.il</A> )<BR></FONT></FONT><FONT face=Arial size=2></DIV><BLOCKQUOTE style="BORDER-LEFT: #000000 solid 2px; MARGIN-LEFT: 5px; PADDING-LEFT: 5px"></FONT> <DIV><FONT color=#000000 size=2>Which is better 4.0 or 5.0?</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT color=#000000 size=2></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT color=#000000 size=2>what are the benefits of activeX?</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT color=#000000 size=2></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT color=#000000 size=2>Is it worth it?</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT color=#000000 size=2></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT color=#000000 size=2>I've just started to learn on 4.0 should I get my company to 5.0?</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT color=#000000 size=2></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT color=#000000 size=2>If I do need to get 5.0, please give me some **** hot reason why to justify the cost.</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT color=#000000 size=2></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT color=#000000 size=2>I work in instrumentation and control ind.</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT color=#000000 size=2></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT color=#000000 size=2>thanks ash</FONT></DIV></BLOCKQUOTE></BODY></HTML>
I can give you at least a couple reasons why I like VEE 5.01 ActiveX.
The first time I used it was to place data tables in MSExcel and do
functions on the data. We're also getting a new paperless repair &
reporting system soon and I want to be able to access the MSAccess
databases in the VEE test program to verify the DUT is at the right
test station at the right time and not skipping steps. I would never
have tried this using DDE although I've heard it works. Microsoft never
really supported DDE but ActiveX is their hot code today. Another use
I've had recently was trying to get data from a QualMark environmental
stress chamber. they use the UDP protocal and I couldn't get the TO/FROM
Socket object to work with it. I also couldn't get MSWinsock.ocx to
work, either. But I DID get winsock.ocx to work in a little ActiveX
component that I made with Visual Basic 5.0. Not only that, but since I
was at it I made an entire display panel with alarm lights, process
displays. the whole ball of wax, and I made it all easy to access in
VEE. Next I'll try to get the winsock working through the API without
winsock.ocx because I think it's weird to wrap an ocx in an ocx. It's
really nice to know that if you can't do something in VEE, or it's time
consuming to do it in VEE a third party vendor might have usable code,
or just make it yourself.
