        Thanks Greq,
                I already use the binary technique in all my work, but this is a
program written by another user (HP SSV) which they are proposing to send all
about the world.  To implement the fix seems to require a lot of effort to find
all the reads and change them.  If this is a know bug, is a fix in the works? 
And why does the UNIX version work ok.  Even the PC version works if the number
of bytes sent is Jussst right.  Would I be far off guessing it has to do with
the interpretation of the int32 to the size of the allocation, and if you're
just lucky, the number is big enough to hold it all, but small enough not to
"bomb" out?

Known bug ... I bet the device returns IEEE 728 data (check with the Bus
I/O monitor and make sure you have set your DIO accordingly):
    
   #A<16-bit_int><data>
    
The int gives the length of the data.  You can synthesize the proper read
through the following Direct I/O transactions:
    
   READ BINARY NULL BYTE ARRAY:2                  // Read #A.
   READ BINARY x INT16                            // Get length.
   READ BINARY Y BYTE ARRAY:X                     // Read pin to get data.
    
Note how the length is read into pin X and then used as an array length for
the array in the last transation.  If you want to read REAL data, say, you'll
need to divide it by 8.
